This article lists the specific configurations required on the Cisco/Linksys E and EA Series router to allow BluOS Players to communicate.
Note: This article does not document the steps required to set up a network.
BluOS Players use the mDNS/Bonjour protocol for node discovery. mDNS/Bonjour is a multicast protocol but cannot traverse network subnets.
When the router blocks the multicast traffic or if the mDNS/Bonjour support is outdated – it creates problems that affect both Android and iOS devices as follows:
- BluOS Players (few or all) are missing in the BluOS Controller App..
- You can ping the BluOS Player or open the Control Panel menu of the Player on a web browser – but the Players are still missing in the BluOS Controller App.
- When performing an iNet Scan on the BluOS Player – the Player is displayed, but the Bonjour services are unavailable.
Note: These issues are intermittent. Disabling and re-enabling the Wi-Fi network on the devices or rebooting the router solves the problem temporarily.
Configuration Procedure
- Open a web browser and enter the router's IP address (or Default Gateway IP address of any device connected to this router)
- Enter the router username/password.
- Select Security > Firewall.
- Select Enabled for both IPv6/IPv4 SPI Firewall Protection.
- Check the Filter Multicast.
- Reboot the router.
Note: Update the router's firmware to the latest version from the Cisco / Linksys Support site. These firmware upgrades improve the router's performance with mDNS/Bonjour protocols.
