Optical link connection

I connected my Vault 2 to a pair of KEF LSX II speakers via an optical cable, but when, on the speakers, I select Optical as the source, I am met with silence. I think the cable is ok as I can see the red light at the terminal. Is there a setting I need to change on the Vault or the speakers? Should I try connecting via an RCA cable?

  First to check, output settings for the Vault (i.e. whether it's set to fixed or variable [although variable is not explained in guide]).
  Second to check, volume level on the Kefs.

  Thank you very much, KriHad, that was the answer. My KEF speakers and Bluesound Vault 2 are now working happily together via the Optical connection.
