C658 Airplay volume
BeantwortetWhen connecting to the C658 over Airplay, even the lowest possible setting in iOS before mute is too loud and I have to manually turn down the volume with the remote. Something is really wrong with the Airplay volume setting in iOS and the volume in the NAD.
"Airplay 2 volume scale" seems to methion a scaling problem. But in this thread the airplay volume is higher than the one in the BluOS Controller. On my end it the the opposite and really extreme since airplay volume control is practically not usable
BlueOS: 3.6.12
iOS 13.3

Hi Axel
That thread was something else and has since been updated in the firmware. We are having a hard time replicating your issue here. I would try powering down the C658, wait 5 minutes then power it up again and see if the problem persists. If it does, please select Help, Send Support Request so we may review the Player log file.

I know this is marked as answered, but I have been experiencing the exact same issue on my unit since purchase. The lowest possible volume setting when set from an Apple device using airplay corresponds to -47.0db/28% on the C658. One notch lower on the airplaying device, the C658 mutes. At 50% on the C658, the airplaying device is at about 2/5ths on the volume slider. This has been tested to occur using multiple devices and multiple version of iOS and MacOS, including iPhone 11 Pro (13.5.1), iPhone 8 (13.6), 2013 Macbook Pro (10.15.2), 2019 Macbook Pro (10.15.6). This has occurred for as long as I've had the C658, which spans three versions of BluOS (3.8.13, 3.8.17 and 3.8.19).

For me this is also still really unsatisfying!
Even I understood the airplay limitation, it would be great to somehow be able to configure the range so that volume control makes sense again. Let’s the is a parameter of maximum internal AirPlay volume in the C658. The device could then adjust the steps from that and finally AirPlay can be used seamlessly. Please bring a solution for it.
(In General a Maximum volume setting would be great to prevent speaker damage)

Chris, here is the follow up case I created back then:

Hi Axel
Other's cannot see your interaction for privacy reasons, but I will be happy to share the great and detailed response by our level 2 support team at NAD. It is a volume scaling issue that our players have far more detailed volume control than your Apple device - our recommendation? Once you have started AirPlaying, switch over and use our volume control, not Apple's;
Hello Axel,
What you're noticing here is a limitation of the Apple volume slider in comparison to the volume slider used on our devices. The Apple volume slider has a maximum of 30 different volume levels, meaning there are 30 options or steps between full volume and mute. Each of these volume steps represents roughly 2dB of volume for a maximum of 60dB of volume swing using the 30 steps.
In the C 658, your volume is able to go from -80dB up to +12dB which is a total of 92dB where the Apple volume slider can only handle 60dB total. It's this discrepancy that prevents the AirPlay volume from going lower. Counting from +12dB would have the volume go all the way down to -47dB on the C 658 before the last volume step which would be mute.
I hope this helps clarify the behavior of your C 658. Please use the BluOS App for finer control of your volume.
Should you need anything else, please don't hesitate to ask. We're here to help!
Kind regards,
Jade L.

Hi Tony,
thanks for the reply and forwarding. Although using BluOS App is a possible solution, it is not a convenient one, since I would like to use the hardware volume controls on my iPhone / iPad. What speaks against a customizable min max volume range in BluOS?

Is there anything new on this. Even you explained the situation, it is not really a solution to the problem. controlling usually I control the volume with the + / - buttons on the apple devices or with the crown at the apple watch. This is not possible with airplay in such a manner, that I can really be able to control the volume without mute the system or damage the speaker.
I mean, since it was already mentioned in the support ticket, it is a mapping which is performed on airplay values. So I am not really understanding why this can't be variable

Hi Axel
This is an issue for Apple. Sorry for the confusion - please contact www.apple.com/airplay and they will be best able to handle this as the fault and remedy rely on their implementation. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

I just purchased a C658 and I have the same Airplay volume issue. I don't agree that this is an Apple issue. You guys have created a product that supports Airplay and in this case iOS, not the other way around. I get the same result in MacOS as well. Does this Airplay volume issue happen with other NAD products or is it specific to the C658? If it is, why? It seems like a software solution should be possible. Another question is why do the hardware buttons work with Tidal in direct mode and not the Bluesound app? I love the C658 and Bluesound app is very nice except for these issues. Thanks in advance for a future solution.

The AirPlay Volume issue happens with all Apple AirPlay Speakers regardless of brand.

I have the same, and started a separate thread on it here:
Volume control via Airplay for NAD C658 – The Bluesound Support Crew
I get the same answers, ignoring the issue on in an upmarket product, touted to be Airplay complaint.
WHen reaching out to NAD directly, they are equally ignorant around the issue only copying generic answers from earlier issues on the very same case - they even delete the postings in the forum.
How sad, after showing NAD/blusound trust and purchasing their products. I love the C658, but the Airplay volume is broken by design and will be sent bck to the dealer with that message. I'll also try to reach out to apple to have them engaging and stopping NAD from market products s Airplay compliant when they arent.....1 -
It is really sad that they aren‘t even open about finding a solution. They could provide a custom scale setting etc.
With other devices it works perfectly so it indeed is an NAD and not Apple issue.
I also do love my c658, but this airplay volume thing really bugs me2 -
Why is it still impossible to set the volume at a right level with AirPlay?
Please fix it
