Unable to play certain albums via Albums option
BeantwortetI’ve had my Bluesound Node 2i since February 2020. All my music is in FLAC format stored on a NAS drive. A Synology DS220+ 4Tb in RAID1. The share works perfectly on both an Android app and an iPad one.
Since an upgrade to the firmware last June I cannot play certain albums from the Albums tab. Individual tracks from the Songs and Artist options work fine. I can even select a song on one of the affected albums, tap the three dots to the right and select Go to Album and the whole album is available to play.
But if I select Albums - Gladiator - for example, I get the message saying “Couldn’t load content. Please try again”. It simply will not play. There are at least 10 Albums affected.
I raised a ticket with support four months ago and the issue is still not fixed. Even after I described how to get access to the Album via Songs. Surely it can’t be that difficult to fix.
The same happens on a five year-old Android smartphone and a two year old 5th Gen iPad. I really do want this fixing. Am I alone in having this problem?

Ray - if you're talking about red book audio CDs, they don't have any Metadata.
If a CD is ripped to a digital file the user must add tag metadata to the digital file created, this may be done automatically by the ripping software by it recognising the CD from track numbers and lengths and pulling metadata from an online database of which there are several and few are ever 'correct' as they are populated by users.
MP3TAG is great software for adding or tweaking digital audio file tags which I have used for many years and should be purchased by Microsoft and included in Windows IMHO.

I'd keep that app well away from Microsoft if I were you. :)

Chris, no, I was talking about standard music CDs. I ripped my collection several years ago but looking at what I used it was dBpoweramp. Purchased a full licence and it handles all the metadata.
I agree that for other CDs mp3tag is fine.

@Ian Shepherd, I agree. Many years ago Microsoft bought a home finance package and renamed it Microsoft Money. Then they stopped selling it. I'm sure the original company would have continued to support it.
Fortunately it's compatible with all versions of Windows so still useable.

Yeah, Microsoft would break then abandon it I guess..
Ray - the CD ripper module within dBPoweramp 'handles' the metadata but all it is doing is recognising the CD from track numbers and lengths and pulling metadata from four different online databases (discogs, GD3, Musicbrainz & freedb) which are all maintained by public submissions and are generally ~90% 'correct' (correct as per the info supplied with the CD). The CD itself just has the audio on it, no metadata whatsoever unless it is a multimedia (non red book audio) CD which have the audio and a separate data track on them to be read by a PC and were cool for fifteen minutes in the 2000's.
I always open the metadata tab once CD ripper has recognised the CD and populated the metadata and tweak it using the CD as reference. Very, very rare there are no edits required and I have >15,000 tracks ripped from CD.
Also have >5000 tracks purchased and downloaded as digital media and rarely they are tagged appropriately or correctly also.
I am super anal with tagging..

Chris, thank you for reminding me how dbPoweramp works. I remember now. It was nearly 9 years ago I ripped all my music CDs. That was easy compared to taking recordings from DAT (remember that?) and hand-editing each track to remove blips as the original recordings were from my Townsend Rock / Excalibur \ ATF5 turntable playing the vinyl albums. It took me 5 weeks to finish the job and add the metadata manually for every track / album.
But then I discovered a big problem. Different sound levels for that music compared to the ripped CDs. Fortunately a piece of software called foobar2000 could adjust the metadata to equalise the tracks so they all had the same volume level.
Happy days!

Does anyone have a description of the rules BluOS uses when it processes tags? I have some notes on the subject that are several years old but I've no idea where I got the information from so I don't really trust them.
I'm hoping that better knowledge of this would help me find and "correct" the tags that are triggering the "Couldn't load content" error. I'm only planning to do this on albums I listen to a lot - the rest can wait for a fix in BluOS.

The indexing rules of BluOS are obscure, no documentation on it whatsoever.
The bug is triggered if an album has an albumartist defined, like "X", and the artist for each track is the same, but differs from X, like "Y".
Ways to workaround:
- delete albumartist X for each track
- delete artist Y for each track
- rename artist Y for one track, I apply this to the last track, like "Y··"
Note the last option will obviously not work for singles, i.e. albums with only one track.

Thanks Gerben, that's more specific than anything I'd seen so far.
I've found quite a few examples where AlbumArtist is "X" and Artist on all the tracks is "X" too, but your workarounds work on those as well, at least on the small number I've tried. Looks as if BluOS is doing some clever stuff to cope with missing data and sometimes trips over itself. Unless it's those Ruskies . . .

Unless it's those Ruskies . . .
We're Canadian eh!?!
That being said, even though our head office is just outside Toronto... in trying to find the answer to those clever back flips our Sr. Architect did when designing the indexing, he is based in The Bay area in NorCal so has been incommunicado this week so I don't have an answer on how to manually implement the fix our QA is testing now. Thanks for your patience Peter...

So, Ray... If I take the album The Visitors by ABBA, set Track Artist to ABBA on all tracks and then set Album Artist to THABBA on all tracks, would that create the conditions for failure in your set-up? Or is there more that I have to do to my poor old metadata?
(I made this change and had no problem accessing the album every which way.)

@Ian Shepherd, not sure as Windows Explorer doesn’t include TrackArtist in its list.
Looking at Gladiator that does fail for me the Album Artist for all tracks is Lisa Gerrard. The Composers vary with 4 different ones.
Try changing the Composer for one track.

Hmmm. Ok. I'm looking at and managing the metadata using MP3tag.
I don't go near Windows Explorer at all apart from MP3tag borrowing it to find a folder full of nice FLACs to open.

Ian, I’m only using Explorer because my computer with MP3tag is turned off. Explorer is read-only.

Unnerstan.

PS Please turn your computer on. :)

I’ve found a new problem and unsure if it’s connected to the one here.
I have two “songs” with the same title but with different artists. The song title is Also Sprach Zarathustra. One artist is the LA Philharmonic Orchestra, the other artist is Deodato and is a pop version of the tone poem by Strauss.
When I tap the LA version Bluesound plays the Deodata track. And when I select the Deodata option it plays the LA version.
Any thoughts on this? The same is happening with “The Power Of Love”. I have three versions. Huey Lewis, Jennifer Rush and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Same mix up.
Can other members check their collection please and Bluesound of course.

I have one version of "Astor Mo Chroi" on CD1 of the BBC "Bringing It All Back Home" album and another version of the same song on CD2 of the same album. When I use Song view, it lists them one after the other and it plays the one I tap on. The track numbers within each album are not the same, but I guess it would be too much of a coincidence if your three "The Power of Love" tracks were track 4, say, on three different albums.
Now if Bluesound could publish the rules they are using to build an index key from the tags they read off a file, we'd have some idea of what might be going on . . .

@Peter Beech, just checked and all three versions of Power Of Love are three different track numbers.
@Tony W. Got any clues why this is happening? Do you want me to raise a ticket or is reporting it here sufficient?

Okay Tony. It suggests my latest problem will be fixed with your January update.

It would be nice if this bug finally gets resolved this January.
However, out of the five bugs I have reported this year, it would be the first one that actually gets fixed. And that is besides the issues and bugs reported by others.
Bugs do not resolve automagically, they will hunt the BluOS users forever, unless the BluOS team takes appropriate action.

@Tony W. Firstly, Happy New Year to all at Bluesound. I’ve remained patient as you posted before Christmas that the team had identified this problem and was testing a fix.
Can you provide an update please? When can we expect this update to reach us?

Hi Tony
The comments state it is about the meta tags in the Library, but I also get the problem when streaming from Tidal. Am I mistaken to think it should never happen with tags from streaming services?
I cannot influence tags from streaming services so cannot change those. I am also severely affected by this bug. I know a little about programming and if it is replicated it should be fairly easy to fix. Hope you will fix it very soon!

I opened the app this morning and saw an update was available. I chose to install it immediately. Left it alone until the blue LED was lit. I opened my Album selection and selected a previously problematic title. I’m delighted to say it opened without error. Tried it on a few other ones and those too were okay.
Finally, i searched for song titles that have more than one artist. Unlike earlier they now play the correct version.
It’s taken seven months but I have a solution to this longstanding problem. I hope others are happy too. Thanks @Tony W. All’s well that ends well. 😁👍

I’m astonished that no other member experiencing this problem has posted on this topic. Has the update fixed your problem as it did mine? If so, why not let us know.
I’m also surprised no one at Bluesound has commented.

Yes, my problem seems to have gone away.

Hi Ray,
Indeed the bug has disappeared, finally fixed after 8 months. No mention in the release notes, BluOS prefers to maximise obscurity.
Unfortunately some other issues remain, one that still keeps me on Android controller v 4.2.4.

Pinot, perhaps you could list the other issues. I’m on 4.8.0 and BlueOS 4.8.17.
