Hi Leo, presets are not for direct use with a folder but rather the music itself. Such as an individual Album, radio station or a playlist created with multiple items such as albums and individual tracks. Folder view is not really intended as a method of navigating your music.

In the Bluesound App, under Library you should find your Albums listed under…Albums. As a test add a few albums to the playing queue, the queue can then be saved as a playlist and this playlist can then be added to a preset.

    Dear Seppi,

Many thanks for your prompt reply. I understand the idea, but would have preferred an option to preset folders. Anyway, I tried your suggestions with "genres", like for instance, in my case, "smooth jazz" and "chansons". I then checked how many songs Bluesound found for these genres and it appears that many, many songs are missing. So, if I would make a preset "smooth jazz" I would expect to have all songs with this tag, but in reality it is not even half. Is there a solution?

    Many thanks.

    Regards,

    Leo

    Hi Leo

Bluesound can only index what it finds in the metadata tags of your music files. So you will need to examine and probably edit your library outside of Bluesound.

I actually use a program called Bliss to mange my artwork but it also handles other tags including the Genres.

This was a big issue for me initially but with patience AND time (loads of it) I eventually got there. I have about 45,000 tracks and most it turns out were tagged incorrectly or not at all (CD rips, downloads from stores).
As Seppi suggested I initially started to use Bliss as a tool when I realised this ‐ it's a fantastic piece of software but I do have to stress that you need to be very sure and very careful when learning it and implementing its recommendations. I wasn't as careful as I should have been and messed much up, but I did resolve many, many incorrect info.
In the end I decided to just bite the bullet and edit them all manually, album by album, track by track, cover by cover. Took me about 5 months working on and off but boy, do I know my collection and it is now perfect. BluOS has some very specific needs regarding tags, such as the ridiculously limited Max of 600 kB covers (yes, seriously) and needing to have artist, album artist etc correct on every track of an album or it will show up as separate tracks and not a whole album. But, once you do so it all works perfectly.
One other thing I personally found very useful was AudioRanger tagging software- there are many out there but this one made sense to me.
    Good luck.

    Dear Seppi,

Thanks again for your prompt reply. As most of the songs I have on my NAS are not lined to an album I have to go by genre, which would be fine, too. But this does not seem to work properly. When I say: "genre = chansons" the programme indeed spits out songs, albums, artists and composers. However, a song listed under "song" is not necessarily shown under the artist's name in "artists". In fact, there is only a handful of artists I can see, although I have dozens of them. I did the same check for "easy listening" and " smooth jazz" and the result is the same.

As said, most of the songs do not have a link to an album, and the album is called "unknown" in such a case. I must therefore go through the hassle of selecting an artist and choose his album "unknown". Unfortunately I do not see how to include an artist with all songs in one go.

I have of course doublechecked the tags of these files and there are definitely all correct. Still, the Bluesound software does not seem to recognize everything. So, what am I to do?

    Thanks a lot.

@Henri Thank you for your input. I use a programme called "Mp3tag" and it is the perfect programme for tagging your music. Very flexible, lots of options and: it's free!

Leo do those tags include any info regarding album title and album artist or are those tags in most cases just blank?

My experience seems to point to BluOS absolutely needing those tags to be filled to function properly - the 'unknown' label appearing seems to point to this being the case as that is what I used to get appearing before I slowly fixed them all.

Example: I may have a filled tag with, 'The Beatles' as 'Artist', but the tag, 'Album Artist' was either blank or had say, Lennon McCartney'. BluOS doesn't always like this and will perhaps throw up 2 albums for the same thing, or, if in the case of one or both of those tags being blank, as 'unknown'. This behaviour was not always consistant so... yea, well.

If I read it correctly to you it appears that 'genre' is really important in finding tracks and so those tags are filled out. This may be so, but my experience seems to point to BluOS needing more to function correctly.

Like you, I ran my music from a NAS (still do) but it was connected to my PC running JRiver out to my system. I was used to navigating my way around using only the folder structure and not bothering too much about tags at all really. But since adding the NAD M33 running BluOS I had to totally rethink that one - BluOS is very specific in it's needs. Sometimes it seems that if one or two tags are empty (or even incorrect) then it gets a bit com-boozled and throws up some hap-hazard results.

These days my old folder structure is still there on the NAS but now not only can I still run things the old way through JRiver if I want, I can now use the magic of BluOS on my tablet. The upside was a really well integrated and flawless database on the NAS which I never ever had before. I can search using any tag I wish and it works every time now (and I'm much more careful with tags when ripping CDs too).

It's a long road I know, but I hope you sort it

    H.

Henri, I have nevery really looked into the album options of the Mp3tag programme I referred to, but I believe it indeed offers the input you are looking for. That is to say: it is linked to a database offering that kind of information so thatt it should be able to import album data. Why don't you just go to https://www.mp3tag.de/en/ and have a look yourself? Good luck!

It seems that your experience with Bluesound navigation is similar to mine, as I have also always been used to just going by folders and not so much by tags. So yes, it needs rethinking!

Thanks Leo - I didn't use Mp3tag, but one much like it - AudioRanger, it does most of the same stuff.

I haven't mentioned it here in this thread but have in others - I have totally solved all my issues over the last 12 months and BluOS works like a charm now. I have tens of thousands of tracks and had a mess initially as I had very bad ripping habits but solved it by:

1 - Using the very, very good 'Bliss' program to do the initial fix. Again (due to operator error and laziness) I didn't take my time to understand it properly and screwed a lot of it up which made it a bit worse in some areas and better in others.

2 - Decided to then go through my whole database track by track and manually tag, edit, sort and apply covers - took 5 months or more chipping away at it. I did this with the assistance of:

3 - AudioRanger, as mentioned above.

Now all fixed while current and future rips are carefully done with systematic tagging. I now know and understand my database very well, which I count as a bonus!

    Dear Sepp,

I was hoping to get an answer to my mail of September 8 (https://support1.bluesound.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/8686369966487/comments/8743373666071).

As said, the Blusound software does not seems to recognize the tags for "genre" properly and, as a result, does not pick up many, many of the songs on my NAS server.

I wanted to allocate presets to some of my favorite genres, which would make handling so much easier. But this of course only makes sense when all songs are recognized and not just some. I bought the Bluesound remote control precisely for this purpose (despite its price!), so as to avoid having to use the smartphone app all the time. Now, I have to use the app, go to Library > Folder > select Server > select Folder.

Hopefully, there is a solution for this!

    Many thanks.

    Regards

    Leo

Leo, I must stress that I do not work for Bluesound and just end user like yourself.

If your tags are not being recognised then you need to email Bluesound support and attach some samples files for them to examine. Also I must emphasise that if you make ANY change to the metadata (tags) you must from the Bluesound App select…Help…Diagnostics and then click on the “Rebuild Index” button.

    Dear Seppi,

My sincere apologies, I honestly thought that you were a Bluesound person! I will now contact the company dirctly. Thank you for the advice to rebuild the index after having made changes. I did in fact alread do so, but it did not work out.

    Best wishes,

    Leo
