Pulse 2i Networking
AnsweredHi, I have a Vault 2i and Pulse mini 2i. I need to use a network switch for the Pulse Mini. I see a lot of discussion a few years back about needing a managed switch. Is this still the case, and if so, do you recommend a particular switch? Thank you

A managed switch in a domestic environment is basically a bag of hurt, all you need is a standard (non-managed) switch that has enough ports for your needs.
My main switch has a metal case only for the reason that it dissipates heat better so hopefully lasts longer as it’s handles a lot of traffic. In various other locations in the house I have tiny little Netgear ones that work fine and where I am current sitting a POWERNODE is connected to one and working 100%.

Thanks Seppi. When setting up the vault I had to connect directly to the Ethernet. Having an unmanaged switch prevented setup. Now I’m about to install a pulse mini and must use a switch in that location. This makes me suspect I’ll need a managed switch, but since I have an unmanaged one available I’ll try that first and see.

Hi David, can only assume that there was some compatibility issue with the switch you originally used, as you say give the unmanaged one a try first. There is hall of shame of switches on the internet somewhere that have issues with ironically Netgear having most listed, luckily these are no longer available.

Seppi - Connected the Pulse mini without resorting to a managed switch and apple tv works through the same switch. Either the switch I tried with the vault 2i had a compatibility problem or the vault 2i won't work with an unmanaged switch. But too much effort and crawling around behind furniture to try and resolve that question!
