Bluesound and controller tablets/mobile phones on different networks
AnsweredI'm an end customer.
I've got a very busy network. Lots of hardware connected via Ethernet cables. Five Vlans for different traffic separation. Lots of Wifi antennas controlled by a Ubiquiti UDM.
Since I've installed the Bluesound hardware, I've had nothing but headaches because everything seems to work properly. But as soon as the network becomes busier at the end of the day then I start noticing a lot of issues. Suddenly the music stops playing and the controller app shows that some Bluesound devices left their groups.
My Bluesound partner has convinced me that my network is a bit messy and that I should try the Bluesound devices on a separate Vlan, because at first they were configured to work on the same Vlan as the private Wifi. But as soon as I changed to a different Vlan I couldn't control the devices using the controller app. Apparently some multicast issue.
I now have created a different network with separate LAN switching just for the Bluesound devices. Apparently haven't had any issues with the music stopping or group disband. But now I can't control the Bluesound devices from the mobile app.
What exactly is needed to allow mobile app to connect to Bluesound devices on different subnets which have routing between them?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Rui,
Your network is the issue, as you already know, but it can be fixed and work the way you want it. I have a UDM Pro with several USW switches and AP's with 12 vlans running. Below are a few of the individual vlans I have running for the following systems & hardware on my network.
1 - Crestron vlan
2 - Kaleidescape vlan
3 - Bluesound vlan
4 - Streaming Video vlan (Roku, Fire Sticks, Chromecast, Apple TV, devices)
5 - WiFi vlan (this is for all our our personal wireless devices, laptops, phones, ipads, etc.)As you can see all of our personal wireless devices are on a different vlan than our AV systems, specifically our Bluesound Systems and we are still able to control our entire Bluesound ecosystem WITHOUT any issues. In addition, we can control all our other systems, (Crestron, AV equipment, etc.) across multiple vlans. As a starting point, MAKE SURE you have IGMP Snooping AND Multicast DNS enabled on the proper vlan(s) on your network. From there, create the rules you may need. If you do not know how to do this or you're unsure of what to do, you may want to ask how to enable IGMP & Multicast DNS on the UI community boards.
Keep in mind, working with IGMP & Multicast DNS requires extra steps to get things working when using vlans. It's not plug-n-play like it is on a singular network.

Hi Rui
Your BluOS Controller App MUST be on the same network segment as the Players. BluOS uses multicast which is not routable.
Consider looking at upgrading your network infrastructure to something that will fit your needs. Ubiquiti and Pak-Edge both make great products...
That being said - in my home, I have over 40 IoT devices (not just a test house of multiple BluOS Players but 2 work from home offices, Cameras, Video Streaming, Doorbells, Lights, Vacuums... you get the picture) - I am running a single ISP-provided router in the basement and 1 off the shelf repeater on the top floor... without regular issues - but I did take the time to make DHCP reservations for most of my IoT Appliances...

I must admit that I have difficulties with my BluOS devices via UDM Pro. Multiple times a month, my BluOS Devices disappear from the device tab in my BluOS app. Can only be solved by disconnecting NAD M10 from power source and full restart of NAD M10.
Have NAD M10 and two Flex 2i's - all hardwired and on default LAN. BluOS on iphone, connected via Wifi to regular LAN. Multicast and IGMP Snooping are set to ON for regular LAN.
What am I doing wrong here? I thought it should be straight forward but unfortunately does not seem to be. Thanks in anticipation!

Hi Jochen
Review your Ubiquiti documentation and disable Minimum RSSI and disable Auto Optimise Network. See if that helps

Hi Tony, thanks for reaching out - much appreciated. Both options were already disabled, so far no luck - no devices shown in the BluOS and re-installation requires a reboot of all network devices. I am starting to 'duplicate' GoGo Delicious setup and putting the BluOS into a separate VLAN. So far, I can see my devices again in the BluOS app. Only outstanding element is having spotify to recognize the BluOS devices in its native app. Your and GoGo Delicious' help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

FYI - I ended up doing a full factory reset of my NAD M10 to overcome all BluOS connection difficulties.
