    The USB drive needs to be formatted to FAT32, NTFS or Linux ext4, also must not draw too much power (0.5A). 

    If the drive meets those requirements then try popping a few tracks into the root directory to see if they get indexed. You may also want to try a USB memory stick with again just a few tracks to see what happens.

    On insertion the drive will get automatically indexed.

    Worthwhile powering off (remove power) from the Node for five minutes and see if that helps.

    Just for me to fully understand: can a HDD with its own power supply can be connected directly to the Node?

    Yes, I used to connect a big old drive repurposed into a metal case which had it own power supply.
