connection of a HDD via USB to Node 2i

After the debacle of the firmware update that compromised my ability to browse and play music from my music library, I disconnected the HDD containing the library from the Apple Airport Extreme and plugged it directly into the Node 2i via its USB input.
The HDD connection immediately triggered a notification of a USB device that was now connected, but, when entering the USB area from the BluOS controller there's nothing that can be browsed. Also, it seems no automated indexing occurred (i.e., the blue light of the Node stayed blue without any white light period).
The library in the HDD has multiple folders. Might this represent an issue? Is there any way for me to play my music through my Node?

Just for me to fully understand: can a HDD with its own power supply can be connected directly to the Node?
