Node 2021 digital out to external Copland 215 DAC - Cannot get bitrate any higher than 44.1 khz

Hi,
I have just bought a new Node (2021). However, when streaming from the BluOS App on my iPhone 11, I cannot get a bitrate any higher than 44.1 khz to my existing Copland 215 DAC.
Some further info:
- The Node auto-installed the latest firmware when I first fired it up.
- I have tried connecting via both coaxial and optical outputs, but to no avail.
- As far as I'm aware, Apple Airplay cannot stream any higher than 44.1 khz, but as stated above I have been streaming direct from the Bluos App, and not via streaming service apps over Airplay.
- Within the Bluos App, I have loaded my accounts for Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz, Amazon Music HD - but none of them will provide a bitrate higher than 44.1 khz to the Copland DAC.
- iPhone 11 Software vers 14.7.1
- When I connect my MacBook via USB to the Copland DAC I can get full range of higher bitrates no problem. But of course, the reason I got the Node was to stream HD music from my phone! :-/

Two observations - are you listening to MQA? If you are, it doesn't look like your external DAC supports MQA so you will be limited to a single unfolding of up to 24/96 playback - the other is I don't see on that external DAC where you would see the audio output.
We would be happy to take a closer look by selecting Help, Send Support Request in the BluOS App so we may review the log file, but it may be best to contact your external DAC Manufacturer as I suspect that is the root of your problem.

thanks for swift reply. I don't think the Copland 215 supports MQA, but I have tried enabling and disabling the MQA option in the BluOS app but I still only get 44.1khz. The Copland indicates the bitrate on the front of the unit.
I'll try sending help request via the App when I'm home later - thanks for suggestion.

yes - I noticed that, but it looks like it is an LED that indicates 44.1 or 48.1... unless the x2 or x4 also indicates 96 or 192...

Yes that's right. It's a rather convoluted display, but the Copland shows standard rates of 44.1 or 48, and then applies multiples of x2, x4 or x8 to indicate higher rates (88.2, 96, 176, 192 khz etc.)

I suspect the issue is with the external DAC - but as mentioned, we will be happy to take a look...

Hi Tony,
I've actually managed to resolve the issue - the problem was with the bitrate I was getting from my streaming services, and nothing to do with my Node or DAC. Seems that all of the music from Spotify Connect, and most from Amazon and Tidal is actually streamed at 44.1 khz. However, I finally managed to get multiple HD streams from Qobuz at 192 khz, so it seems my DAC is MQA-compatible after all. All sorted!

Hi Damien, Qobuz does not stream MQA but does have 192khz tracks. I think MQA is still only available from Tidal.

Hello Tony, I Just purchased a Bluesound Notde N130 and a Topping DAC D70s but when I connect the Node with USB to de topping, its not working, when i try it with digital coax i get 44.1khz with TIDAL.
why USB dos'nt work ???

Hi Dirk, USB out has not yet been implemented but will be in a future firmware update. The Topping D70 only supports MQA via USB.

It was release a good week ago, check for updates and literally just plug the USB cable in and it gets enabled.

I’ve got the 130 node with a Topping D90SE MQA as a DAC connected via USB. The 130 saw the DAC automatically. That works fine. But …. As mentioned by others 44.1 khz is max what my DAC receives although it can process up to 32 bit 768 khz as well as MQA. Streaming service is Tidal hifi master. What I’am missing too is bitrate etc info in the app in order to see whether all my music is 44.1 khz or that the node is the limiter.

Hi Michael, I suppose the question to ask Topping is “does the DAC display the bitrate it receives (most probably) or the bitrate of the unpacked MQA?”

It indeed displays the received bitrate

You could download and pop some test tracks of varying resolution onto a USB memory stick and see what the DAC displays.
