BluOS 4.14.1 and Proton VPN

HI Herman,
Looks like you have the answer already. You will have to turn off VPN. -
Hi Mark, why did it work before and why is the widget still working with the VPN switched on

In ProtonVPN app, in advanced settings there's an option to enable LAN-connections which allows you to connect to devices on your local network while being connected through VPN. Not sure (I can't check this) if this option is available on iOS though, but it should be according to info from Proton.
---
iOS and iPadOS
Open the Proton VPN app and go to ⚙ Settings → Connection → Allow LAN connections and toggle the switch on (or off).

I just checked on my Android phone, when I enable this setting in ProtonVPN, I can connect to my Blusound player.
When I disable it (default setting = disabled), BluOS can't find my Bluesound player. Which makes sense since all the traffic is routed through the VPN tunnel so it's not exactly on the same network as your player anymore.
If this doesn't work you can also try the "Split Tunneling" option in Proton and exclude BluOS app from being routed through VPN.

Thanks for all the work. The “allow LAN connection” option doesn’t solve the problem. So I will look at split tunneling and contact Proton for the first option. Thanks again and regards, Herman

Problem solved !!! Even with The switch “allow LAN connection” on the problems persists, but there is another switch “allow alternatieve routing”. When this switch is turned off everyrhing workes well. Thanks for your help and kind regards, Herman

This solution does not work with me. Will Bluesound fix this? I don’t want to turn of my VPN.

Laurens, the alternative routing switch wasn’t the solution. It worked for a couple of times. But finally I solved the problem by installing the BluRemote app. Works fine, is simple and excellent support!

Similar issue here - although it's not actually preventing the Bluesound app working, it's just being annoying.
When I try to do something in the iOS controller app whilst connected to the VPN, it pops the "Wifi not connected screen" page over the controller home screen.
All you have to do is swipe it down and carry on what you're doing - but it's really tedious having to do this all the time.
None of the other apps on my phone that control things on my LAN (Sonos - for an old speaker, Tado, Chromecast, Firestick) do this, so I'm not sure why the Bluesound controller does. It's just a bug in the controller software that needs fixing.

Same issue here running NordVPN on iPad - „WiFi not connected“ pops up, tapping somewhere else closes the message and everything works fine.

I have the same issue: wifi not connected when my vpn is active but able to control the bluesound nodes. Tried everything, also the activating alternate routing. Turned this on, problem persists. I don't have a VPN subscription to turn it off so please consider fixing this.

There is nothing to fix. Sounds like your VPN is working properly. The whole point of a VPN is to mask and hide your device from the rest of the network. You will have to consult your VPN documentation to allow local access. This cannot be resolved in the BluOS App as it is happening at the Operating System.

Hi Tony, I disagree with your remarks. The problem didn’t exist in the past. It’s there since 4.14.1. However it seems that something has changed in 4.14.2 so someone in your organization was convinced that is was a problem. Now I can use the app but after 2 - 4 seconds the screen WiFi Not Connected appears. But: now I can sweep down this pop-up screen and everything works fine. How do you explain this. By the way it’s all running on IOS 26.4.2 with Proton VPN enabled (version 7.4.0)

No changes have been made to the BluOS Discovery process in quite some time. Again consult your third-party VPN documentation.

Then explain - as I mentioned in my post above - why no other app I have that accesses IoT devices on my network does the same thing?
It seems very obviously an issue with the way the BlueSound app is handling the VPN connection.

BluOS does not have a registered cloud service. Note you did not register nor do you require a User ID to use the BluOS App. Instead, it relies on live network scanning and reporting rather than looking up on the Internet from a stored list. What ever changed, I would suggest be with the VPN software or a recent iOS update. If you have further questions, feel free to get more 1:1 support at support@bluesound.com

I have registered a service request with the ProtonVPN Support team to help diagnose this behaviour. Maybe they can add something in this thread. I'll keep you posted.

I shared my settings in my VPN app on my phone with proton support. LAN connections are allowed and the kill-switch is turned of. In other words: everything is in place and it should work.
So how can it be that it works but this annoying message about wifi not being connected is popping up every time i open the BluOS app and switch to players??
To get a step further i suggest to further investigate versions and compare them.
My versions: iOS app 4.14.2 BluOS 4.14.12
Proton VPN iOS: 7.4.0
iOS: 26.3.1
iPadOS: 26.3.1
Question to support: is it in some way possible to revert to a previous version of the app?

"So how can it be that it works but this annoying message about wifi not being connected is popping up every time i open the BluOS app and switch to players??"
This is exactly the point.
The app finds the BlueSound device
The app is capable of sending instructions to the BlueSound Device
The app then pops up the annoying "Wifi not connected" screen over the home page each time it successfully executes an instruction to the Bluesound, despite it being connected to the same WiFi network
I mean that *might* be the VPN's fault - or it might just be what it pretty obviously appears to be, an annoying bug in the BlueSound app 🤷🏻♂️

Hi, correct... That's why, with help of the proton support team, i tested 3 other versions of the proton vpn app in testflight: 7.3.0 , 7.4.0 , 7.4.1. (beta)
All versions the same behaviour, wifi not connected although it is...
Would you be willing to supply me with prevous build info so we can investigate the possibility that the BluOS app could be the cause?
Thanks for you help.
Regards,
Danny

Previous versions of the BluOS App are not supported. The issue, as stated, is based on how VPNs work to prevent network traffic from being detected. We consider the matter closed.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.-1
