We do drop The and A for bands locally. We, however, don't use last names - admittedly so Seeger is under P while Seger is under B. In trying to do so, we find many last name fields are often blank causing more confusion as we would then find Nebraska under S (Springsteen) while Live '75-'85 under B (Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band). If we tried to somehow reverse engineer it, we would end up with Lynyrd Skynard under S and Max Webster under W (check out the not widely known last one, it's pretty good).

So that is how we file it. As for how Qobuz, your local library or other services file it, that depends on what is in The Album Artist field (or Artist field of the Album Artist is blank).

Also, Stones should be R... but I did remember a certain infamous record store on Yonge St. in Toronto, in the '80s used to file Springsteen under B for "Boss, The"

I Agree. It is annoying when all databases sort artists simply on the first letter of the name. So Tom Petty ends up under the T instead of the P. While everybody's CD and record rack and every real life store has Tom under the P.

One small correction to OP: BluOS sorts The Police under P, not T.

I understand the dilemma of the programmer: where stops first name and where starts last name. When is an artist a band and when a person. It is easy to filter out "The", but not easy to automatically do the rest. Ricky Lee Jones as example: what is first name, where starts last name. My folder list results in "Jones, Ricky Lee". For the Police it is "Police, the". It would have been easy if the artist tag was three tags: <artist first name>, <artist last name> and <artist band>. But that is not the case. So we probably will have to learn to live with the annoyance :-)

What to do with Little Richard? L or R? Software cannot solve that dilemma and will make a mess of it, unless there is some kind of conversion table between tag and sort order.

Is it Pretenders or The Pretenders...?

:-) That depends on what album you are listening to, same with (the) Rolling Stones

Taj Mahal - under T or M? Musicbrainz has him under M.

Newby to BlueSound. Why not implement support for the sort tags? I personally use beets to organize my library and it sets artist/album artist sort fields (and I update them if they are not to my liking). This also helps sorting different languages like Russian/Chinese/Japanese where you put a romanized string that sorting uses. That way 张惠妹 is sorted as A-Mei easily.

Indeed, that would help. There are some common sort fields:

    ALBUMARTISTSORT, ALBUMSORT, ARTISTSORT

Is it possible to publish a list of tag fields Bluesound is using?

    My suggestion:

accept all common field and make a setup for BlueOS, which fields I want to use.

It's really not easy to use the tags for the own library for composer, work, movement, orchestra, conductor, artists...

I totally agree. It is complicated. So let the user (the ones who care) deal with it by maintaining the Artistsort tag. I did this for years with Squeezebox. So Tom Petty showed up under P like he should. Now I am beyond disappointment this is not supported with BluOs. I would be so easy.

Please give the user at least the choice to enable Artissort. The ones who care spend a a lot of time to keep their tags clean. May as well be able to use them right.
