Connecting External HDD

I have a 4 TB external hard drive that I would like to connect to my Node Nano. Close to 3 TB number of files were all loaded to the external drive from my Mac computer. Would I be able to just connect the drive to Nano? If I must reformat the drive, I will lose all the files, yes? Any insights are most welcome. Thank you!

  Yes, If you ever reformat a drive all your data is lost.
