Store/restore issues when using multiple USB SSDs
AnsweredHello -- I have completed ripping about 1000 CDs to the Vault (a process I never want to repeat). So I'm going to regularly backup the music database. Since I live in a fire prone area, I've decided to go with two identical SanDisk 2TB USB SSDs and rotate them to keep one of them 'off-site'.
The problem is whenever I rotate home the remote SSD, the Vault doesn't recognize it and says it needs to be reformatted (even though the Vault store had originally gone fine). If I reformat it, I can use it for multiple sequential store operations and the Vault always recognizes it as a music backup, but then when I rotate that one out and bring the other SSD home, the Vault won't recognize that SSD with the older backup.
I only have a few iterations of this process - but since I'm batting 0 for 3 right now, I must admit my rather crude backup system isn't going to work if the Vault won't recognize the older 'remote' backup if I ever needed it. (Although if I ever really needed to restore the remote SSD due to a major event, it would likely be to a new Vault device and maybe the result would be different).
Is there something about how the Vault store process works that it always expects to 'see' the USB SSD that it last stored to?
Before I bought the unit, I checked with Bluesound if the store operation was always a full database store and was told it was. So I'm confused why a slightly older full backup is viewed as not formatted..

The initial backup is a full copy, however subsequently they are incremental which is why if you add just a few CDs the backup is much quicker. So unfortunately swapping drives around is not going to work.
I make additional copies using a Mac across my network, one copy onto the Mac’s external drive array and the other onto a NAS. The physical drive then goes off site, to be retrieved as and when required.
Having a copy on my NAS means that all my CD / downloaded music is still available even if the VAULT is offline.

Hi -- Thanks for the reply. I guess if both the existing Vault and the home backup SSD were rendered useless due to some incident, I would need a new replacement Vault and that would likely recognize the 'off-site' drive as a valid backup. Not sure how to test that though. I'll have to check if the factory reset on the Vault erases the database. If not, I assume I could test the Vault that way with the remote SSD -- at least to see if the Vault immediately rejects or accepts the drive.

A factory reset of the VAULT does not erase the drive.
