    You may need to manually enable server mode (as in the support doc you linked). Currently server mode is disabled and the USB drive is treated as a removable drive hence the index is lost each time you unplug it.

    Update - the problem was that the USB drive had 2 partitions. One of the partitions was hidden on a Windows PC so I hadn't noticed. For some reason that prevented the Share USB Drive pop-up, and no server mode option.

    Once the hidden partition was removed the 'USB Server' mode works perfectly.
