Volume much lower with digital output vs analog on Node 2i

Using a Node 2i streaming analog directly to a Sim Audio Moon 250i integrated amp produces a much higher volume compared to using the Node 2i digital output (via TOSlink or RCA Coax) to an external DAC.  I have the Node volume setting fixed.  Is this expected / normal?
