NAD C658 - volume goes up to 100% by itself
AnsweredHi!
I'm addressing this issue broadly. I've reached out to NAD support too but have yet to receive an answer. I am not sure where the responsibility lies either. This is my post to NAD (posted on 2 occasions). I hope there is a solution to this as I really want to keep the unit.
Post 1:
I got a brand new NAD C658 just before Easter. It’s coupled with a NAD M22 power amp.
Today I played some files from my network before switching over to Tidal on Windows 11.
I was trying to select Tidal Connect in the Tidal app, but it didn’t show up. So I chose to connect it through Bluetooth instead.
What I eventually found out while playing is that my VPN (IP Vannsih) was blocking Tidal Connect for some obscure reason.
So while still playing through Bluetooth I disconnected the VPN client. Went back to Tidal, and now the Tidal Connect option was available. I switched to that. But that almost blew my speakers right away. I was playing on a volume setting around 45 with Bluetooth. But when switching to Tidal Connect the C658 pushed the volume to 100% by itself!! Although the volume limit is set to 0 DB as well. That is NOT good!
Why was this happening? I am afraid it will destroy my speakers with that massive power that the M22 is putting out.
Post 2:
It happened again today. Different scenario. I was playing radio on Tunein via the Windows BluOS controller.
I switched over to the native Windows Tidal app and connected it through Tidal Connect. What happened next was that the BluOS controller DID NOT switch to Tidal connect. Instead it stayed on Tunein, but at the same time it pushed the volume all the way up to 100% again.
I'm dead afraid of using your product now and will have to return it. I have speakers worth $5.000. Who will pay if they blow? This is my first NAD product and I am far from impressed to be honest.
Windows 11
Windows App: 4.2.1
BluOS: 4.2.10

Hi Jorn - Seppi is on the right track here... I do recommend you contact our good friends down the hall at support@nadelectronics.com who can make some recommendations and best practices when using end-point solutions.

Hi Seppi and thanks for replying! Yeah, you're probably right. I thought it might be caused by the Tidal Connect implementation in the BluOS controller. I just hope someone takes responsibility as this easily could have ended in a speaker disaster. It is a worry as I'm sitting here with my ears glued to the speakers listening for distortion. Thanks again :)
