You don’t make a direct Ethernet connection, you connect the Mac and POWERNODE to your Router via Ethernet.

If having discovery issues I would look at reserving an IP address on your for your POWERNODE and Mac Mini, whilst there check your router settings to ensure Multicast traffic is allowed. Also see if there is a setting that says IGMP Snooping or IGM Proxy... turn it on.

Thanks but you lost me after 'reserving an IP address'.

Your Router manual will detail how to do this, you may have to Google to find an online PDF version.

Each network device that attaches to the Router gets assigned an “address” by the Router but the Router issues another as the “address” is time limited (minutes to several days depending on the Router config / default). A reserved address just means that the same “address” is always used.

If either device (Mini or Powernode) are using WiFi for networking then the connection can experience interference. Connecting both devices to the network using ethernet cables provides a stable connection.

Here is a simplified explanation of basic networking:

A WiFi router creates a network by to assigning address numbers to each connected device. These numbers, IP addresses, can be reassigned randomly by the router unless the address (IP number for the device) is reserved in what is know as the routing table, a list of assigned IP addresses. The IP address (like a postal address or phone number) lets the router know where to send data from one device to another,  for example from theMini to the Node. Reserving a an IP address makes sure the address for a device stays the same and is not reassigned. This is done from the router, usually through a browser interface (Safari). Check your router manual or internet provider for information on how this is done with your router.
