I have several great-sounding speakers from the different generations of HiFis I have owned. Typically the electronics fail or degrade or get out-fashioned before the speakers, and the speakers have to be paired with a new system. It would be great to have an UberFlex module in 100-2002$ range that does more or less what Flex does, but on existing speakers: Turning them into wireless speakers in a multi-room setup.
Ideally the product would come in master and slave variants and would include:
1) Network module (WiFi, etc...)
2) Streaming decoder: A full-featured master node with OS for one speaker and a simplified/cheaper slave node for the other -- or several simplified slave nodes if one already has a Bluesound Node
3) A mono Class D amplifier (like a BTL IcePower) in ~30-60 watts over 4/8 ohm range
Like that for around 200-300$ I can revive a pair of speakers I really like, and my ears are used to, as a part of my multi-room setup. I am sure many youngsters will jump on that as a way to revive their parent's old speakers!
This would be a rather smart marketing move as well, because it offers a cheap way to gradually extend a system, and get locked-in over time given the growing investment and the degree of interdependence between the components.
Also, the choice of speakers is a very subjective choice and most people want to keep up with what they like -- no matter how good your Flex speakers are. Such a setup gives them the choice to both objectively and subjectively satisfied by getting the sound they want combined with the ease of use of your devices.
