So this was unexected, Bluesound Node can control volume over Toslink.
AnsweredI have my Bluesound Node connected to a pair of Elac Debut Connex speakers and I wanted to do a direct comparison between the internal dac of the Elacs and the internal dac of the Node. I used the remote of the Elacs to switch between the analogue input (using the Node's dac) and the optical input (Node optical out) and this is when I discovered the Node can control the volume of the Elacs over the optical out. I always thought you can't control volume over an optical connection.

You are controlling the volume by using variable output i.e. the signal is being attenuated by the Node.

Yes, I know I'm using variable out on the Node but this is the first time I have device that can adjust the volume over the optical output. That means the Node's volume control also works in the digital domain and I always thought that's not possible, at least not over the optical out.

Correct, on the Node it works for both coaxial and optical but not USB.
