HDMI woes

Hi Neil
Please check your TV documentation and ensure that the HDMI port your POWERNODE is connected to is in fact connected to the TV in the specific HDMI port labeled ARC for Audio Return Channel.
If so, and you are still having issue, please email suppport@bluesound.com

Thanks for your reply but I tried that from the start. My TV went on an endless loop where it would flicker and look like it was having a heart attack whilst the HDMI lead was connected. Same with two other leads. I gave up after an hour or two of trying everything.
If no-one gets back to me with a lead that definitely works I will buy whatever the latest one is on Amazon and give that a go. If I still have the same issue then I will email Bluesound Support.0 -
I also had problems with HDMI so I took a different route. I bought a cable with a 3.5mm jack at both ends and I use to headphones out on the tv to connect it to the analogue in on my Node. Next I set the analogue in on my Node to variable output and I created a preset for it. I also bought a cheap universal remote and I use the number 1 numerical key for the TV preset. Now when I watch TV I just have to press 1 on my remote and that's it. I can adjust the volume with my TV's remote and it always works because I'm using the headphones out on the TV.
Mind you, this only works if you don't give a shit about surround sound.

Looks like a hardware issue, the only TV HDMI port you can use is the ARC / eARC port, all others are useless because they will not transmit audio, they are receiving audio only from sources. Have you try on a different TV? Your LG TV firmware is Up to Date ?

What concerns me about a solution like yours [Nico] is sound quality. This is a reasonably expensive bit of kit and I assume we all bought one because we are bothered about good quality audio. Having to spend large amounts of time trying to come up with workarounds for something as simple as connecting an HDMI lead is utterly absurd and incredibly frustrating.
Have you compared the sound output in the method you’ve used to how it sounds via toslink? I imagine the digital connection will sound noticeably better, but of course you lose the ability to control the volume with your TV remote that way.
I do have another workaround that works. I sometimes connect my TV to my Powernode via Bluetooth. This allows me to use my TV remote for volume. Unfortunately though the connection drops out every time you pause the TV for any length of time, switch it off etc. I then have to manually select the correct Bluetooth device, wait for it to connect… takes time that I would rather spend watching TV. Also, the Bluetooth connection obviously doesn’t sound as good as the digital connection.
The Powernode has a HDMI connector. It would be awesome if it actually worked!

Hi Sylvain. Yes I connected it via the ARC connection. I actually tried all of my TV’s HDMI ports when the ARC port didn’t work. The TV goes into meltdown, flickering etc. It’s clearly trying to communicate with the Powernode but having no success. At the time (some months ago) it had the latest firmware, as did my TV. I gave up with it out of frustration and used the toslink, which sounds fine, my gripe is that I cannot use my TV remote to control the volume, hence why I wondered if anyone can recommend a HDMI lead that they have successfully used to establish a working connection.

Hi, strange behavior for a 2021 TV, the ARC standard should be respected. Usually, you have issues with older TV, when the ARC just arrived on the market. I had a PowerNode 2i before my M10, with Sony TV 2017, it was fine, but not exempt of bugs (Sony issue). Have you try to factory reset youyr TV ? Check the SIMPLINK (CEC) settings ont the HDMI port (i think it's HDMI2 on LG TV), if it's not enabled, the communication may failed between devices. Ensure there is no other HDMI devices connected on the TV, the automatic switch can trigger the loop. Your TV should never try to switch on the ARC HDMI port, because there is never input signal on it, only the TV send Audio to this port, so no switch is possible.

If it can help, i found someone who had issues with Arc port that was affected to an other port !!
"
For some reason, I found that the ARC being assigned to a different port.
You guys can try going to All Settings > General > Devices > External Devices > Universal Control Settings
Select HDMI 4 (where I assume we have our sound bar / device connected). Click Manage Settings.
I found there what HDMI port ARC was assigned.
I moved my connection to my sound bar/device to that port… and it worked for me.
I am guessing a patch on this is on the works in LG as I am sure there is a reason why Arc/E-arc is labelled to be HDMI 4 on the TV."

Hi Sylvain, Yes I recall trying all of the HDMI settings on my TV, including the CEC settings. No matter what I tried the flickering, non-communicative behaviour was the only response. I have no other HDMI connections as I stream everything. I don’t even use a satellite connection.
I have not tried a factory reset on the TV however… I have loads of adjustments to my Picture Mode settings and I would rather not have to manually adjust them all after the reset. I’m going to order whatever the latest HDMI lead is on Amazon and give that a go. If that doesn’t work then I guess a factory reset will be the last option to try. Thanks very much for your response.0 -
Oh, I just saw your next post. I will try what you suggest when I get my new HDMI cable and see how it goes. Many thanks.

You're welcome ! I hope you will find a solution, i know it's frustrating when using the Node as primary audio system for TV.

@ Neil: Yes, I have tried the optical out on the TV and it obviously sounds better. However, high fidelity sound is not a priority for me when I'm watching TV. As long as it sounds good enough and I can control the volume with my TV's remote, that's all I care about.

So I just learned there are HDMI adapters without the CEC pin and apparently this solves a lot, if not all problems with HDMI ARC. Note that removing the CEC pin does not impact sound or vision, it just stops the transmission of the CEC signal. Do a search for HDMI killer/blocker and you'll find it on Amazon.

No CEC = No volume control, HDMI is useless without CEC for Home TV use.
