Powernode 2 suitable for KEF R5? Minimum impedance 3.2 ohms
AnsweredHi,
I'm aware of Powernode 2 users running other KEF speakers which have a minimum impedance of 3.2 ohms, however wanted to check if KEF R5 is compatible?
R5 specs as follows:
- Amplifier power (recommended) = 15 to 200w
- Nominal impedance = 8ohm (min 3.2ohm)
Cheers!

I would personally use the latest POWERNODE rather than an older Powernode 2 / 2i as the newer version has an updated power output. Probably best to try or at least having the option of returning the speakers if you run into issues when the volume is turned up.

Thanks Seppi, that makes sense to use the latest (80w) Powernode. I'm also hoping to get a subwoofer which I believe should alleviate some strain on the amp. Is it possible to put a limit on the max volume in the BluOS App? (I'm thinking this could be handy to prevent others accidentally turning volume too high).
Unfortunately the R5 Speakers are second hand on ebay - so wouldn't be able to test or return.

Yes, using a subwoofer would help as it’s the bass notes that need / use more power.
The BluOS app does let you set minimum and maximum volume levels.

Hi Seppi, did you buy the K5’s? I’ve just picked up a 2i and, similarly, could get a pair of attractively priced Kef K5’s… Thanks in advance.

Hi Nigel, I’m not the OP so sorry can’t comment on how they performed.

Apologies Seppi! My mistake…
Paris, would you mind commenting? Thank you

Yup I'm running the R5's with a Powernode N330 and SVS 3000 Micoo Subwoofer. The R5's sound good.
I did have them hit a safety cutoff during setup, but that was without the subwoofer and before I put a limit on the max volume. It can go plenty loud now without any issues.
Be aware though that the 2i is less powerful than the N330 so your experience with the R5's might be different.

Good point! the 2i is 60wpc and the POWERNODE N330 is 80wpc.

Thank you both. I have a feeling it will just be a little underpowered and I’m better searching for some R3’s or go down one of the other popular combo routes. I’ve already got some LS50’s which I could try them with.
