    Using the line in will be of higher quantity.

    A simple USB-SPDIF converter will give you the best result.  Don't waste your Node X.

    The node X comes with a TOSLINK Optical to 3.5mm Mini Adaptor, is this what you mean please?

    Hi LD, Ken is talking about an adapter that plugs into the laptop unless of course your laptop already has a digital optical out. This would yield better audio quality than using the line out of the laptop.

    Thanks, didn't catch on to that. I'll go look for them.
    Are there any good brands to look out for?

    The fancy ones can be quite costly.  You may start with a $20 generic one from Amazon to try it out.

    As Seppi said, if your laptop has an optical output already, just use it.

    sadly it doesn't, it's a couple of years old but still decent.
    I don't mind costly, up to a point, as long as it does things properly

    @LD WIlliams

    I'm curious why about the use-case for playing sound from the laptop. If you are playing music files BluOS is the best choice. If for YouTube or other sources then by all means wire to the Node directly.

    Many laptops have a minijack which doubles as an optical out, most Macs have had this for decades and cables that do double duty are available on-line. You may find that your laptop does as well.

    As long as the inexpensive mini to toslink cable works it will be identical in signal to an expensive one.

    @Brian

    Netflix, Prime, Disney+, Paramount streaming, why not get as good as you can from every source.
    outs on the laptop are 3 USB A, 1 USB C, HDMI, 3,5mm,
    USB C abd 1 USB A are in use, available are HDMI, 2 X USB A, 3.5mm

    The 3.5mm may be optical.

    Well I got this converter and it is working just fine. Their driver seems stable for UAC2.
    So I now have USB out from laptop to optical in to the Mode X, and it sounds pretty good to me.
