Great question Jeppe and great answer Davywhizz! It's all dependent on your setup.

If you've got the time Jeppe you can test the NODE sub setup vs your Onkyo sub setup, but the short and skinny here would be that for your case in specific, it sounds like the Onkyo is doing a brilliant job of handling the lows and highs on its own, so it is probably best to keep your setup as-is (plus, its always good to have one controller in a system; managing everything from the Onkyo will make things much easier to maintain).

There may be no benefit with your system, but I decided to use the Node sub out rather than the one from my amp, having tried both options. The amp always sends the full frequency range to the main speakers, even with a sub engaged, and there's no way to stop it. So I prefer the greater control offered by the Node, in terms of setting the crossover and cutting the lower frequencies going to the mains. I need to have my speakers closer to the wall behind than I'd like and having that greater control helps with that placement.

Thank you, Sam and Davy. It seems I am not on the wrong track in the way I have things set up (that´s what my ears tell me as well). And Davy, as I understand your comment, your amp does not offer the controls that mine does in terms of cutting off frequencies (do you also have 5.1 or is yours a 2.1?), and that is your reason for using the Node sub output instead. Cheers!

I only do old-fashioned, two channel stereo, though I've grown to love a sub!
