Powernode 2i Tone Controls and Audio Quality
AnsweredMessing around with settings on my Powernode 2i, it seems like bypassing the tone controls adds some noticeable presence to the sound. I know there’s a 6db difference between flat with tone controls engaged vs tone controls bypassed, but this seems like more than just a volume bump. But, volume increase can really change perceptions. Anyone else notice this? Thoughts?

Yes
It is exactly 6db drop when enabling Tone Controls to account for headroom when you add or take away base or treble. The default is Tone COntrols off and is also our recommendation. Please see this Help Centre article for more details; https://support1.bluesound.com/hc/en-us/articles/204636618

George, I think you've hit the nail on the head - volume changes can indeed influence perceptions. Provided that the overall gain is adjusted to compensate for the inherent changes when the tone controls are toggled on/off I can detect no impact whatsoever on the quality of the output.
