MQA bewilderment
AnsweredQuestion re: confusion about MQA when using the bluesound node (which supports mqa) connected via coax to the denafrips ares ii (which doesn't support mqa). Will this combination reproduce mqa quality files or does the dac also need to be mqa compatible? Secondly, is a coaxial the optimal connection for this setup? Thank you for accommodating me here, as I'm new to these concepts.

When you use a non MQA DAC and have external DAC turned off (correctly as your DAC does not support MQA) then the Node will perform the first MQA unfold and sends this to the DAC. Most MQA material is not that hires so don’t worry if your DAC does not report high bitrates but you will get some of the MQA benefits.
Optical or Coaxial are both fine to use, generally chosen depending on what free inputs you have available on the DAC or just personal preference.
Bluesound hardware is an MQA decoder so if you wanted to listen to the fully unfolded version you will have to bypass the external DAC and use the analogue outs on the Node.
