Optical output feeds the home theater. Want to use the USB out to a headphone amp, but it doesn't send signal/operate unless I disconnect the optical cable every single time.

  USB output is not supported on the NODE 2, only on the NODE N130 - check your back panel to confirm which model you have. That being said, USB output on a NODE is only used for external DACs, not headphone amps. When used, it will also disable other output sources such as Optical output.

  So based on everything you have provided, correct, this will not work as you hoped it would.

  Back panel just says Node... and my amp works with it using the USB port,, but not when the optical cable is connected.

  My amp is an Audeze Deckard. It has a dac built in it that matters. Also The node is in fact an N130. Correction made and clarified in the title not to confuse others.
