External DAC on Node 2i

Hi,

Owner of a Node 2i, I want to upgrade it using an external DAC. Currently my Node is connected to a Rotel power amplifier (RB 1070) and I use the first integrated amp to manage the volume via the app.

Can you tell me if it is necessary to have a DAC with preamp or if a simple DAC can suffice, and if in this case the volume can still be controlled via the BlueOS app?
