music dropout

Not a techie, so the story goes, I'm listening to music when all of a sudden there's nothing.  All music stops and when I look at my computer, the music is supposedly playing but nothing is coming through.  If I skip to another song, it may play.....hit or miss.  Can anyone tell me what's going on???
