Distorted crackling sound on Pulse mini

I bought a powernode 2i earlier and was so happy with it that i just bought the pulsemini 2i. Set it up and listened to both music files over samba and streaming audio services. The speakers are heavily distorted when audio is played, both from network shares and streaming. But the audio to the HD800's from the headphone jack is perfect. The distortion is particularly noticeable with bass and increases as the gain is increased. I restored the unit to the factory defaults - no difference. I downloaded and applied the update - no difference. I am at a loss here. I tried the analog input and same result - heavily distorted. Not sure what to do next - any suggestions?

  Sorry I might have missed it - the audio is distorted over your new PULSE or is there sudden distortion on your POWERNODE?

  If its the new PULSE, based on your testing it sounds like it may be hardware related, but reach out to our support crew via Help > Send Support Request in the BluOS app so they can confirm.
