eARC HDMI 192/24 input?

With the imminent release of tvOS 27 for the Apple TV 4K and its promise of 192/24 output over HDMI for Apple Music audio, there will be many of us wondering whether the Node Icon will accept this hi-res LPCM stream through it’s HDMI input for bit-perfect hi-res music playback. Could the bluesound support crew confirm if this will work?

  Yes… but….

  The HDMI ARC port on Bluesound hardware supports 24/192, however I must stress that this port is for connecting to a TV’s ARC port. The Apple TV then connects to another HDMI port on the TV.

  The catch is if your TV actually can pass through the audio from the ATV to your BluOS device without changing the resolution. A lot of TVs resample to 48kHz and then pass this resolution onwards.

  Thanks Seppi, that’s a good point. Since the Node Icon does not currently display the HDMI sample rate or bit depth it’s hard to know one way or the other. My LG TV *claims* to do pass through to the eARC, but how would I know for sure without buying an expensive analyser?

  In case it helps, I had already confirmed that my Hisense TV, when set to eARC—ARC alone does not work—and passthrough, changes the playback sample rate between 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz when connected to my Eversolo DMP-A8 with eARC enabled.

  Many people believed this was not possible and that the Apple TV always resampled everything to 48 kHz, but that is not true. I have now also confirmed that the tvOS 27 beta supports up to 192 kHz and automatically changes the sample rate as needed.

  I have not been able to achieve this over standard ARC—for example, with a WiiM Plus—and as soon as I switch from eARC to ARC on either the TV or the streamer, it stops working.

  Ultimately, it will depend on the TV and whether it offers true passthrough. What is clear is that this is great news for anyone who wants to use Apple Music with bit-perfect playback while controlling it through the native app on an iPhone or iPad.
