WD My Cloud - NAS
BeantwortetBlueOS recognizes the WD NAS drive on my network in the settings page & allows me to add it as a server, but does not show the drive as an available source or any of the music files I have on there (FLAC).
Is this because it actually needs to be NTFS formatted? Since the NAS seems to be running on Linux I'm concerned that doing so will then make the disk unrecognizable to the OS?

If you are connected as a file share - drive format is not an issue - that is dictated by the operating system of the source. More likely it sounds like file permissions on the drive's host. Please ensure the folder is shared with full guest access.

Thanks for the follow up (FYI, this is a WD My Cloud drive). How do I change these file permissions? Right now;
- Going to the Mac Get Info window shows "You have custom access" when I select the drive but does not allow changes
- The WD web interface allows me to add users but only via emailing a link
Any ideas?

Maybe getting somewhere? The Mac desktop app has Local Share options not visible on the Android app...
The drive is present;
I can add my "Test Music" folder
I then get this prompt but no dialog box appears to authenticate...
Which leads to this;

Hi Philip.
It looks like you are able to connect you WD MyCloud "public" share (screenshot 1 above).
Are you sure your music is in the "public" folder, and not in any other "share"?0 -
Revisited this yesterday with nearly 2 hours of tech support from WD who finally admitted this product is not a true NAS drive but requires their desktop/mobile software to use & access properly which of course the NAD/BlueOS combo doesn't address.

Hi Philip, if it's a "My Cloud" it's a NAS.
If it's a "My Cloud Home" it's not a NAS.0 -
Hi,
I'm assuming from the comment above that the 'My Cloud Home' will never work with BluOS?

My experiences would say you are correct. Contradicting Bjorn's statement above are numerous sources including WD's own tech information which refer to this device as "WD My Cloud Home 4TB 1-Bay Personal Cloud NAS Server." However, although appearing as a drive on the system, BlueOS does not see the folders containing music.
I have had more support for this over at the Roon site than here & am rather disappointed at BlueOS' & NAD's blame game and lack of clear information on this subject. I think the lesson learned is that buying (expensive) hardware from one manufacturer whilst looking for software support from another is a risk.

It would be a lot easier if they simply stated which NAS drives worked and which to avoid!
I literally bought the drive to store the music for BlueOS...

Hi Philip
Thank you for your patience and understanding. WD MyCloud Home does not support true SMB (Windows File Sharing) without using their native software as per WD Themselves; https://community.wd.com/t/how-to-set-my-smb-folder-to-be-a-password-protected-folder/229010WD Support appears to have a possible workaround here; https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3009
But again, your issue is with Western Digital's lower grade My Cloud Home products not supporting the SMB open protocol. I am sorry to hear you feel you are not getting the support you need. I would try reaching out to Western Digital Support to provide the help you need.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.0 -
Hi Sam
Any and all true NAS devices that support SMB 2.1 or often referred to as "Windows File Sharing".0 -
@Sam, me too. Repeated requests for "just name a drive that will work with your software" were met with a list of NAS parameters that a drive needs to fulfill to be effective on the system, which is not the same thing.
And referring someone who just bought a $3,800 preamp to a drive manufacturer (actually WD were very helpful but did not obviously understand our use case) is a problem to my mind?

@Tony - thanks for chiming in here, apologies you were posting while I was typing.
Please name specific manufacturers and drives (brand x, model y) that you have used successfully with the NAD product line.

Synology makes good, and easy to manage hardware. I have "a few" of them, and the oldest 8-bay is 9 years and still going strong.
I also use a WD My Cloud from 2011 that's been working flawlessly from day one.1 -
Thanks Bjorn, so something as simple as their "Synology DS120j 1 bay NAS DiskStation (Diskless), 512MB DDR3L" would work fine for say a 4TB drive?
Any particular bare drive you recommend?

DS120j will do a good job. Just plug in a new drive, and you should be up and running in 10 minutes. Only thing you have to do is to set up a user and share, and turn off SMB1.
WD Red NAS hard drives has been (very) reliable in my setup.1 -
Thanks Philip, Bjorn & Tony

Thank you Sam for bringing this conversation back up, frankly with work issues I'd let it back burner but I had diligently ripped all my CDs & need to get this project finished.

I have successfully attached WDMycloud Home to Bluos via Android app called SMB Server in Play Store. Bluos now indexes and plays flac albums. Just checked and can confirm it is gapless!
Using a NAD C658 BTW.
