Powernode 2i-HDMI groups

When setting up a Theater Group, the config has a setting page for speaker distances. What difference exactly does the speaker distance setting make to the sound output of the Powernode? After all, there are separate volume slider settings for the rear speakers, so you can set the sound level balance to your taste.
