    Hi Rand

Our good friends at NAD Electronics make some fine turntables. You will also need an NAD PP4 phono preamp with a USB port so you can store the digitised files to a Windows PC. The PP4 comes with encoding software.

I do plan to equip myself with a turntable and preamp. I was thinking more about what comes after that. I run Linux at home, not Windows. The Audacity audio-recording package runs on Linux. I was thinking of using that to digitize the sound. (Is there anything better?) And then do I burn a CD and have the Vault rip it?  I want to do this cut by cut and re-create the album metadata.  Or is there a direct computer-to-Vault-library method that doesn't go through a CD?

I don't plan to get rid of the LPs, I just want to be able to call at least some of them up from the Vault instead of lowering a needle on them.

Please explain: if you have a turntable, hooked up to the NAD PP4, are you saying you need to digitize to Windows, (or other platform), then how do you subsequently transfer to the Vault? Do you need to burn off Windows to a CD and then load? Can you not transfer from the PP4 directly to the Vault 2? I am not an electronics expert, just looking for instruction - in layman's terms, of my options to take my vinyl LP collection and load into my Vault 2 for safe keeping and better sound

Update: I obtained an Audio-Technica turntable that has both RCA and USB outputs, and a built-in preamplifier.   The Vault 2i has two USB ports on the back, but I believe those are for daisy-chaining expansion disk drives to the Vault 2i. So as far as I can see, the only way I can get old vinyl recordings, AND their metadata, into the Vault 2i is to digitize the sound with Audacity and use Audacity to curate the metadata and burn CDs that the Vault can then rip. If there's another way, I'd like to know about it.

You cannot hook up a turntable or NAD PP4 directly to the VAULT, but you don't have to down-mix in Audacity to CD - if you encoded as 24/192, go ahead and drag those files (with Metadata) to the Music Folder of the VAULT and reindex.

Here's how to drag and drop to the VAULT;  https://support1.bluesound.com/hc/en-us/articles/200387457

I have done this using audacity.  I hook my turntable up through typical RCA cables to my receiver the on the audio out port on my receiver, I connect it directly to my mac mini or PC using an RCA to headphone jack and plug that into my PC/MAC.  Then when I open the Audacity software there is a bit of fiddling to get it to recognize the appropriate input but when it does, I can then record directly on to the PC.  After doing that & re labeling tracks, I can then export the file as a FLAC directly on to the VAULT folder.  Works well the only issue is pops and surface noise from the record and I have not found the noise filter on audacity to work that well.
