Persistent cracking/popping sound over Dolby
Hi there,
I’ve had this issue a number of times before but it was never consistent enough to start to put together what was actually happening. I finally noticed a pattern and wanted to write in about it.
When watching a show with Dolby 5.1 (no difference between normal Dolby signal or Atmos), for some shows that have loud atmospheric background sounds (e.g., American Horror Story, Altered Carbon, etc.), a persistent and rhythmic cracking/popping sound will start and keep going for a period of time. I don’t really know what reliably stops it other than sometimes it stops on its own and sometimes it stops when I switch sources or shows and come back to it.
I connect my LG C9 TV to the pulse soundbar 2i using a high speed HDMI 2.1 cable. The cracking sound happens regardless of input source (Apple tv 4K, native LG apps, x1 box, etc). It also in unaffected by eARC being enabled or disabled.
I was originally concerned that this was a cable issue. What I discovered is if I switch the HDMI output from the tv from Passthrough to PCM, it stops the cracking/popping sound entirely. If I switch the output format back to Passthrough, the popping sound will resume.
I’ve read some people have experienced this issue due to connectivity problems with their internet connection. I’m not sure how that would be the case here since I have gigabit internet, and I have cat7 cables connecting all devices (Apple TV, sound bar, tv apps, etc) directly to/from the router.
Is there any way to reliably fix this? Right now my only solution is to flip audio output to PCM which isn’t ideal since PCM output from my tv is currently limited to stereo (multichannel PCM is supposed to come via an update in the coming weeks).
Related - is there anything in the works for the soundbar supporting 5.1 multichannel PCM? Or does it already?
Best,
Nick

Hi Nick
Please select Help, Send Support Request in the App so we may look at your log file and better understand the formats occurring when you hear this. This is not a normal experience that you are hearing.

Thank you for the tip. I just reproduced the issue and submitted a support request through the app.
Back to my other question, is there any word on supporting multi-channel pcm in the coming roadmap?

They are all related as you shouldn't have to switch the TV to PCM.

I get that - in my case, there is a noticeable delay when I send Dolby audio from my Xbox One to our TV, so we have to use uncompressed Stereo. My TV will support multichannel PCM (uncompressed 5.1) soon and I wondered if that is something that would be able to be sent to the soundbar. Asking because we plan to get the two satellite units to create a surround setup soon and it would be nice to use uncompressed surround coming from our Xbox.

Hi, I have this exact issue. It makes it Impossible for me to use the hdmi arc feature with Netflix on multiple devices: internal TV apps (LG C9), Apple TV and PlayStation 4 as well. Has there been any progress to solve this?

in a separate thread, Nick confirmed the issue was with the TV and LG was issuing a software update. Please contact LG.

Jonas, is your issue the audio delay or the cracking/popping sound?
Also Tony, is there any word on if the soundbar will support LPCM input to create a surround system with two wireless Flex’s?

It already does; https://support.bluos.net/hc/en-us/articles/360000220107

Thanks Tony. My question was more if the soundbar can do anything with 5.1 or 7.1 PCM input vs stereo, and if it can, can it send the rear channels wirelessly to a pair of flexs using multichannel PCM input. I’m clear that it works fine on Dolby input for surround, but wasn’t sure about multichannel pcm input.
