After installing 4.10.13 BluOS firmware TuneIn is no longer beautiful!
BeantwortetSince the update to 4.10.13 the embedded TuneIn in BluOS has changed graphically. But not only that. I never got TuneIn adverts before. And I never heard that annoying ‘Welcome to TuneIn’ every other time I changed stations. My first action was to buy the TuneIN Pro app for a one-off cost of €9.90. When I now use the newly installed TuneIn Pro app via Airplay, everything is fine again. In addition I also logged into the BluOS app with my new TuneIn login details so I wanted to take advantage of TuneIn Pro here too. But it doesn't work. Yes, the login works and I am told that I have logged in but it makes no difference. A) I randomly get two miserably long, stupid adverts from TuneIn itself on every fourth station. B) I hear this horrible ‘Welcome to TuneIn’ before every station change. In other words, the benefits of buying TuneIn Pro are not realised in the embedded TuneIn from BluOS. What do I need to do? Thanks for your answer, Heinz.
PS
What is also strange is that there are stations that I can listen to via the embedded TuneIn version in BluOS with higher resolution than via the TuneIn Pro app even though I have set the highest quality in this app. For example, I can only receive a favourite station ‘ONE Jazz’ in the TuneIn Pro app at 128 MP3 but in the otherwise annoying BluOS app via the embedded TuneIn Pro at 256 MP3. Do I need to understand this?

Hi Heinz
- On the Music Tab, select Manage and log out of TuneIn.
- From TuneIn's Website, under your preferences, 'Forget' your BluOS Players
- In The BluOS App, select Settings, Diagnostics, Reboot on your favourite Player
- Repeat the above step for each of your BluOS Players
- Once they are all rebooted, select the Music Tab and log back in
This will restore you to the TuneIn Premium level. If problems persist, please contact TuneIn Support to ensure your Tier of subscription is being reflected.

I'm experiencing the same thing with TuneIn Pro after the update! Very disappointing and annoying!

@ Tony,
Could you tell me if the new TuneIn API has changed the listening experience for the "free account" users?
I use the Node2 to listen to my national broadcaster every day. Today, the only advert I get is a maybe 5 sec intro for the radio station. As you will understand, I would not like to be flooded by useless garbage.
Also, will it still be possible to enter an URL to connect to non-TuneIn streams?
Thank you

Hi Alain (et al)
We have upgraded the API significantly. The older API we were using was over 10 years old and at least 2 generations deprecated. We were hesitant to do so as we were concerned about things like Custom URLs. Yes you can still create custom stations and still use the same file formats you could before with one exception that is mostly used by a small handful of stations in Asia. If you are having problems, send us a log file..
In all honesty - regarding Ads, it depends on the broadcaster and/or region. I am a heavy TuneIn user myself, and have a free account too. Most of my listening is preset of a local station (INDIE88.1). For as long as I can remember, I get the same advert - it's a 15 second bumper, by the station itself based on the broadcaster voice, highlighting artists playing The Greater Toronto Area in the coming days. Yes it changes almost daily.
Occasionally I hear an advert form other regions or stations if I am testing on behalf of our consumers... but I think it's a timing if my Player is idle as I don't always hear the ad if I have been listening to my local station.ALL that being said, the Ads are not from BluOS, but from Tunein. The TuneIN inserted Ad may depend on two factors I am asking our QA team about, 1) Is the listener using an out of market stream, 2) has the originating broadcaster inserted their own ad first? - Option 2, is completely in the broadcaster's hand, not even TuneIn's.

Thank you Tony,
I am aware that it's the broadcaster sending the bumper (just learned a new word) but was concerned TuneIn was adding some stuff of their own, especially after the upgrade of their API. Luckily this seems not to be the case.
I hope to lift my ban on the upgrade soon, when the Bluesound pest control finishes their job.

TuneIn has been inserting ads on Sonos for years. They're getting more aggressive about ads and ad insertion. Even on Apple's HomePods, they insert their name, e.g. "Here's Groove Salad... Provided by TuneIn" - All they're providing is link, but they're trying to make people think they're providing more than that. The individual radio stations provide all the bandwidth and pay all the royalties, but TuneIn tries to take much more credit than they deserve. Plus it helps their share price.
Bluesound needs to make it easier for people to add custom URLs without going through TuneIn. They should also consider using other radio directory services besides TuneIn.3 -
Tony, thanks for advise. Since English is not my first language, do you mean with „forget“ I should cancel the BluOS player out of the list on the TuneIn website? So I did and I followed all your instructions. BTW I do not have „Premium“ but the Pro version which promise that Incan delete advertisings sent out by TuneIn but no word about this „Welcome to TuneIn“ everytime I change a station. Anyway it does not work, I get advertisings as before.
I would like to agree with Rusty that BluOS should implement also other radio services.

Hello Tony
I have made a little progress. When I log in to the TuneIn website with my account details I still get TuneIn adverts and the ‘Welcome’ slogan just like in BluOS embedded TuneIn even though I bought TuneIn Pro. Only - and really only - if I use the dedicated TuneIn Pro app can I listen ad-free and without ‘Welcome’. In other words, if the Pro benefit of ad-free doesn't even work on TuneIn's own website with my same credentials, then I'm afraid it won't work in BluOS either. Or is there another tip from you?
Thanks and regards,
Heinz0 -
Hello Tony and all interested readers. I now know for sure that I cannot listen to TuneIn via BluOS without ads. I contacted TuneIn support because I couldn't listen ad-free on the TuneIn website. It really only works via the TuneIn Pro app. Here is the very clear and detailed response from the TuneIn support team, which explains the issue very well:
Thanks for reaching out!
Welcome to TuneIn Support! I'm xxx, at your service to make everything easier today.
We understand your concern: as a TuneIn Pro subscriber, you expect an ad-free experience — not just within the mobile TuneIn Pro app, but also when using your BluOS (Bluesound) device and TuneIn’s website. You're absolutely right to expect clarity on how your subscription works across platforms.
Here’s a breakdown of the situations.
The TuneIn Pro subscription is tied specifically to the TuneIn Pro mobile app (iOS/Android). This means:
The ad-free experience and removal of pre-rolls like “Welcome to TuneIn” apply only within the Pro app.
TuneIn Pro does not extend to the TuneIn website, web player, or third-party platforms (such as BluOS, Sonos, Alexa, Google Home, etc.).
When you log into the TuneIn website or use embedded TuneIn integrations like BluOS, you are using the standard TuneIn service, even if logged in with the same credentials as your Pro app.
This explains why:
You continue to hear ads and the "Welcome to TuneIn" message on the BluOS app and TuneIn website.
You only get the ad-free experience when using the TuneIn Pro mobile app.Unfortunately, third-party platforms like BluOS/Bluesound and even the TuneIn website currently do not support TuneIn Pro benefits, as they are technically separate environments from the Pro app.
This is understandably confusing, and we agree it would be ideal if your Pro status extended across all platforms — but at this time, that is not how TuneIn Pro functions.
Here are a few suggestions:
Use AirPlay, Bluetooth, or Chromecast from the TuneIn Pro app on your phone or tablet to stream ad-free content to your BluOS device.
If possible, contact BluOS support again and request they consider support for TuneIn Pro benefits in future updates.
Continue to use the TuneIn Pro app directly for ad-free listening until more integrated support is available. We understand this limitation may not meet your expectations for a "Pro" service, and we’ve passed your feedback along to our product team for consideration in future development.
If you would prefer to discuss your subscription further, including refund eligibility or account options, please let us know — we’re here to help.
Thank you again for your detailed message and for being a valued TuneIn Pro user

Hi everyone, by chance I just came across this post - please note that I didn't create this post or added any comments to it though my name appears here. Something must have gone wrong... When I look up my activities in my profile, this post is not included there. Maybe some admin can have a look... Thanks

Thank you Heinz
And Heinz... not to worry as Heinz is also a big fan of our product. We thank both of you for being big fans of #LivingHiFi

Thanks Tony, I think you misunderstood - there aren‘t two „Heinz R“ accounts (I‘m unique😉).
Someone else (with another name…) must have created this post, and somehow the original creator‘s name was replaced with mine. Maybe the real original poster reads this and can clarify it.0 -
Thanks Tony, I think you misunderstood - there aren‘t two „Heinz R“ accounts (I‘m unique😉).
To clarify - No - You are not - we have 2 gentlemen (separate un-attached unique accounts) contributing under the alias Heinz R.
Thanks for understanding.

Ok, finished highjacking this thread :-) But really, aliases are not checked for uniqueness?

Sometimes things are just simple. I'm Heinz R, the one who started this thread. I now changed my alias to Heinz RB.

Had the same idea, but you were faster 😀 Thanks.

Thank you Heinz RB for sharing the reply you received from TuneIn.
I suspect the new TuneIn API used in BluOS 4.10.xx causes ads to be prepended to a stream, the prior release (I am still using 4.8.21) certainly is free of TuneIn ads.
Perhaps the BluOS developers can fix this, although I won’t hold my breath ;-)2 -
Would be nice if one could go back to 4.8.21

Same here, still on 4.8.21 and no ads, using TuneIn daily.

From Tony's answer 2 days ago, I understand it's the broadcaster adding the advertising and I never had a TuneIn "Welcome" ( still on 4.8.21, and not ready to upgrade yet).
I also understand the new API should not change this behavior and I hope this information is correct.
I also use the custom url option to get a second source for my number one station.
What I would like to know is: does the custom url pass through the TuneIn servers? or is it really independant of TuneIn? Because, for me, this could be a solution to unwanted interference by TuneIn.

Here is how i have dealt with the Tunein advertisements. When the "welcome to Tunein" blather begins, go to the playing now page and the menu (3 vertical dots). Select "select stream" and choose the best stream. The ads will stop. Then and only then designate the station as a favorite and\or preset. Thereafter when you pick that station out of favorites or preset you will get the stream you have chosen and no ads upfront. I use Tunein Pro, but I don't know if that makes a difference.

I've tried Richard L Schuldts solution, and it's working! No TuneIn advertisements!
