Fixed volume inconsistent behaviour with USB and HDMI-CEC
BeantwortetSony Bravia X95h -> Node N132 -> Chord Qutest via optical. Volume setting is fixed in Bluesound IOS app.
First, the real issue. When Bravia Sync (HDMI-CEC) is ON, my TV shows 100% with "x" on the volume, meaning it cannot be changed. TV "knows" this. However, when I change the volume up or down on TV, it simply mutes Node. TV continues to show 100% volume with "X", so it "knows" changing volume is futile. Node too shows 100% volume, but is muted. To fix, I have to hit volume up/down on TV -- OR -- in Bluesound IOS app I tap the "lock" button on volume, and things work again. To me sounds like a bug in firmware.
Furthermore, I could be playing something via Bluesound app (HDMI input is not even active) and hitting volume up or down on TV will mute Node. Node will not switch to HDMI (correct behaviour), but will simply continue what it is doing, and mute itself. So HDMI-CEC command "punches through" whatever Node is doing.
- workaround 1 -> Turn off fixed volume, then TV and Node "understand" each other.
- workaround 2 -> Turn off HDMI CEC, then TV and Node don't need to understand each other, controls are off.
- workaround 3 -> And this is very confusing. Use USB to go from Node to Qutest. Node will recognize Chord Qutest as USB output device, nice. But volume will no longer be fixed. Fixed volume option disappears in IOS app. Changing volume from 0 to 100 does absolutely nothing. So it is fixed, but it does not show as fixed. Changing volume on TV (if HDMI-CEC is ON) will change the volume in Node, but again, it does nothing.
So all in all, FIXED volume experience is inconsistent / a bit confusing to user when using USB OUT.
Is HDMI-CEC muting Node on volume up/down when FIXED is on expected behaviour, or sounds like a bug?

Hi Igor,
I see that you have submitted a support request to us regarding this feedback. A member of our support crew will reach out to you soon.
Regarding Sony, CEC, and Bluesound products - https://support1.bluesound.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/10987633086231-Auto-Sense-and-Sony-TV -
Although the USB digital output on Bluesound Node is designed to have a "fixed volume," it may have a "variable volume" depending on the USB DDC/USB DAC used. This occurs depending on the model, even if the USB device supports USB Audio Class 2.0.
I reported this issue on the forum, and then had a long discussion with the support team, including log analysis. In conclusion, it is a "bug", but there is no clear answer as to when it will be resolved, and it has not been fixed to date.
After trying various workarounds for this issue, I also found that repeated "Reset All" operations on the audio outputs sometimes reverted to a fixed volume. (However, it may need to be repeated several times and may not work.)

Thanks for the suggestion gonzaemon, I'll try the reset! So far has not worked, but I'll try several times. Good to know it's on the backlog / known issue.
I'll wait for support to get to me, but I am suspecting Sony (which has known issues /w HDMI CEC) is sending MUTE on start up as well! This explain the trigger, but does not explain what Node is doing. Let's suppose that is the case.- If USB out is used, clearly Node simply ignore the MUTE. So all those articles referencing Sony issues on this support forum are not applicable.
- if optical out is used with fixed volume OFF, then again, Node ignore the MUTE.
Makes me think it's not mute, it's some other command and it "confuses" Node. In meantime shopping for LG TV, as plan B.

OK this is update for anyone else who may stumble upon this.
X950H sends CEC MUTE on start up when fixed volume is used. Confirmed with Bluesound support who did log tracing. I suggested Bluesound crew to update their Sony docs to state that TVs may send MUTE on sleep -- OR -- startup.
WHY Sony does it? Is it only Sony or all Android based TVs? We don't know. This is not for Bluesound to answer.
If you have Sony TV and are considering getting Node, should you pause? Absolutely NOT. Node N132 is an insane value offering. Change it made to my setup is quite noticeable. It's the only streamer capable of Dolby decode atm.
What you should consider is looking into another TV, or using USB out, or not using FIXED volume setting. You have options.0 -
p.s Node N132 at time of writing is ~750 CAD retail. Only streamer that can decode Dolby and Dolby Atmos. Bluesound knows that by adding eARC and these features, they are opening a door for additional support requests. Besides helping folks t-shoot their audio set ups, Bluesound now has to handle TVs too. That will eat into their margin. Other high end streamers can absorb the cost of support b/c margins are higher.
Bluesound: THANK YOU for offering a streamer at great price, with great feature set. Hopefully with community support and your articles / knowledge base you can keep your support costs to minimum, and continue to offer great products at great prices!0
