Toslink trouble

Is the Toslink In connection on the Node X unreliable? Sometimes it works most times it doesn't. Im using it for my TV and taking it from the Sky Q box. This worked OK through a cheap DAC but through the Node X DAC it's useless. I have tried two different leads. 

Why isn't there a normal Toslink input rather than the 2in1 input?

Is there a fault with the Node X?
