Volume slider does not reset to actual volume level when opening the app

I sometimes see this when using my iPhone, but never when using my iPad.  (Although, I am usually reading on my iPad and so it is not going to sleep like my iPhone).  I am usually using the remote with my Powernode, so when I touch the volume up or down button on the remote, the slider volume on the app will jump to the correct setting.  I know this does not solve your problem, but just wanted to point out that the issue is not unique to you.  Please post again if you find a solution.

Thank you all for your input. I did quite some testing the last few days and came to a solution.

First of all, the volume slider was like going to a predefined setting each time when I opened the app, regardless the actual volume setting of the player. The time slider however, perfectly moved to the actual position of where the song was. Also, when I opened the BlueOS app on both my iPhone as well and my iPad, the volume slider in both apps perfectly followed each other. For me that was a clear indication that there is nothing wrong with my network. As expected.

However, I also noticed that I cannot longer reproduce the volume slider issue on my wife's iPad and my iPhone. Only my iPad was having this issue.
Long story short: I removed the BlueOS app and re-installed it. Viola; issue solved!

Damn. Could enjoy the BlueOS app for one day. The issue is back again. :-(

I read this thread with interest as I've been plagued by the same volume behaviour in the BluOS app on my iPhone since purchasing my amplifier in February. I was delighted when uninstalling and reinstalling BluOs fixed the problem for me four days ago, but today it has returned.

I do hope this has been fixed in BluOS 4.

Thanks Seppi I think I have. I deleted the network and then rejoined but to no avail.

I think it's worth detailing the behaviour I'm seeing a bit more clearly. This applies whilst using the BluOS app on an iPhone, I haven't tried with an iPad.

When the phone is held upright, with the now playing screen minimised at the bottom, if I alter volume using the remote control the change is replicated by the white circle around the small volume icon extending or shortening according to the direction of change in volume.

When the now playing screen is maximised, or if the phone is turned horizontally  to achieve the same effect, the position of the volume control on the slider does not match the volume that was indicated by on the circular volume icon to the right bu tis always central. This jumps to the correct point if the volume is altered with a remote control. But if the slider is adjusted, the can result in a sudden change in volume if the volume was not at 50%.

I've recorded this behaviour on a video and am happy to share it, if this is different to what you and Maurice have seen.

I may be mistaken, but it seems to me that if the volume circle icon is correctly reporting the amplifier volume, but when changing to full screen view and representing volume as a slider it is immediately reset to the 50% mark, then jumps to the correct value when the amplifier volume is changed by a remote control, this suggests it is not a network problem as the app doe shave the correct volume information from the amplifier.

It appears that the volume level that has been received by the app when it interrogates the amplifier is correctly applied when drawing the small volume control icon when the now playing information is at the bottom of the screen, but when the full screen now playing view is first drawn, this value is not applied to the volume slider component of the GUI until a change in volume is reported by the amplifier to the app.

I received feedback from the helpdesk, but I'm afraid they do not read the issue. I received a standard feedback about the hardware buttons, which is not at all the issue at hand:

"Unfortunately with the addition of Airplay 2 for Bluesound 2i players, Apple has taken a very close look at the BluOS app to ensure it meets their standards. Due to their requirements that applications can only use the hardware volume buttons if they play audio directly from the phone or tablet, we were forced to remove this feature from the iOS app as BluOS controls external devices. This feature is still fully available on Android devices using the BluOS app.

With that being said our Quality Assurance team is currently looking into a potential workaround for this to hopefully implement this feature back into the BluOS app, however, I can not say for certain if or when this will become available."

@Seppi, it's NOT a network issue, at least not in my case. Synchronisation between iPad and iPhone works perfectly fine, even the runtime slider updates perfectly when opening the app. It's only the volume slider that seems to reset itself, and only on one of my three iOS devices.

Reinstalling the app works for a few days, then the issue returns.

@Stuart, I confirm the differences in the slider vs the circular volume control (or going to/from full screen). I see the same on the affected iPad. It's just like the actual volume setting is not being read by the app, and the app is setting to a default setting or so.
Please check the runtime indicator. Mine works perfectly fine, indicating that the app IS reading the status of the player, just not the volume setting (but starts doing so after tapping it).

    Thanks Maurice and Seppi

Yes, the track progress indicator functions normally for me too, just as you describe Maurice.

I've reset network settings and this has indeed resolved the abnormal behaviour of the volume slider, thanks Seppi. I hope this persists longer than uninstalling/reinstallling the app, which corrected the behaviour for a few days.

Hi, read back in this forum and you'll see that this problems exists already for multiple years. It keeps coming back. I learned to live with it. Despite network resets, M10 resets, cable replacements etc etc. It keeps coming back. Nowhere in my home network any problem like this exists. Everything, other audio included functions perfect. This case is simple, its a "feature" of the app. A software bug or shortcoming. Call it whatever you want. Its not going to be solved. I can only guess why.

@Ron, do you see this issue on multiple controllers, is it only iOS or also Android?
We use only iOS devices (no Android at hand to check), and only 1 of the 3 devices suffers from this issue. Unfortunately this one is also the main controller for our BlueSound.

So far the BlueSound helpdesk did not impress me very much. Besides the above standard feedback about hardware buttons (which is not related to the issue), I did not receive any help or feedback.

Well, the reset network settings fix only lasted a day.

Let's see if BluOS 4 brings any change. I also have an old iPad, will try that and see if it has the same issue or not, thanks Maurice for the nudge.

As Ron knows, I've also had this issue using my iPad for several years.

What I have found is that the "default" volume position changes from time to time.

Last night, when we had guests, it was defaulting to maximum volume, meaning that if I was playing a track at low volume and if I wanted to adjust the volume, the immediate effect of moving the slider was that the actual volume went to maximum and frightened our guests.

FYI My Vault 2 is connected to an offboard DAC, and my next task is to use the Vault's internal DAC instead to see whether or not there is any difference in behaviour.

(If Bluesound were to express an interest in fixing this bug then a necessary step would be to identify exactly where the problem lies; and tests such as mine would support that aim.)

PS I note that Apple have separated the operating systems for iPhones and iPads but Bluesound only offer one version of BluOS for these two platforms. Is this an issue?

As I've posted elsewhere, I also note that this volume slider issue only appeared after the IOS controller app was amended to provide separate displays for volume and pause/play and it might be linked to the toggling that is now required. (On the iPad these two functions previously appeared in a single display, just as they do in the Windows version. At that time the volume slider behaved correctly.)

I also note that, perhaps, the Bluos Controller app contains some functionality that iOS and iPadiOS can't support, i.e. the controller app says "Do this." and the Apple OS says, "I can't." If so, would Bluesound admit this? I don't know.

The helpdesk asked me to fully reset my router. I think they expect something like a conflicting or duplicate IP address.
Since the runtime slider works perfectly well, I do not think the issue has anything to do with my network. Nevertheless, I did a complete reboot of my network (using seperate modem, router, switches and wifi AP).
For now the issue is gone, but it was also temporary gone when I reinstalled the BlueOS app. Let’s see.

Oh, I did not have to wait long for the issue to reappear…….
Is there a way to share pictures here?

When opening the app, the circular volume indicator shows ~25%. Clicking on it shows the slide bar at close to 80%!
Clicking back to the circular volume indicator show 25% again. Maddness.

My previous internet service provider used to try to blame the fact that analogue voice calls crashed broadband on how things were set up in my house. Since I'm not alone in experiencing that issue, howevr, and since my ISP never appeared to seriously consider that the issue might be external, I decided that they knew that there was a problem that would cost lots of money to fix if they admitted that the problem existed, so then decided that obfuscation and 'blamestorming' was the best policy.

@Maurice. Its on IOS and iPADOS. Multiple iphones and an ipad have "random" volume settings and behavior like Ian describes.

I spent a few minutes last night testing while using my Vault 2's internal DAC instead of my Audio Note external DAC, but the behaviour remained the same.

I toggled away from the volume display to the pause/play display, and then I toggled back to the volume display. After toggling back, I found that the volume slider had altered position - this time to a more central position - but the actual volume hadn't changed.

Since the "default" slider position tends to stay the same during such a test as mine, but does change every now and then, e.g. overnight sometimes, there are probably one or two actions or sequences of actions that cause this "default" position to be altered, i.e. that cause a new "default" to be stored and that, therefore, change the nature of the annoyance.

I was interested to note in another thread

    https://support1.bluesound.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/17370285514007-Controller-UI-?page=1#community_comment_17732124214807

that @Sully - who uses a Powernode - found that when his volume slider went to zero by itself during the 'toggle' process, actual volume also dropped to zero.

So, there we have two sets of information for someone at Bluesound to check out if they're interested.

    Please interprete this behavior :

    - Playing via Spotify connect on M10 via iphone

    - Change volume setting via my iphone buttons to 20%

    - While using Sp.Conn i open youtube on my iphone as active app

    - Meaning youtube takes control of my iphone buttons and while watching a video i change volume of iphone to 80%

    - I stop video and close youtube app

    - Immediately M10 takes over the 80% setting of youtube and blows me out of the room

Is this behavior by design ?

Ok, so the feedback of BlueSound support about the volume bar issue on iPad, is basically “it is what it is, be aware the app is under continuous change, expect things to be not fully working”.

I’ve asked to log the issue, give it a trouble ticket # or something like that. Make it a known issue so that at least the issue is being recognized. So far no feedback on my request. I’ve been asked to give feedback on their support line, so I think they consider the issue “closed”

Acknowledging the issue but then telling the user to live with it doesn't sound very professional to me. It also doesn't sound very Bluesound-like since they've politely told us to look elsewhere for the cause up until now.

I'm guessing that BluOS 4.0 won't be fixing the issue, either, as they would have said so.

On the surface this is not good.

  • Stuart M

So far, I'm finding that BluOS 4 seems to be free of this issue.

BluOS4 seems to have solved this issue. Looks good so far.

  • Ian Shepherd

    Agreed about that.

It's a bit of a relief, although Bluesound never admitted that there was an issue in the first place meaning that, officially, it's "No change."

It's all of the other issues with V4 that concern me and that have stopped me from using my Vault for much right now. I can't even play an album without having to reboot the controller app once or twice, and I daren't rip or re-index or do a back-up.

  • Stuart M

That’s a shame, sorry to hear that. My experience of v4 has been trouble free other than the scaling issue affecting display of the volume slider on iOS devices, since resolved with 4.0.1.
Have you considered reverting to v3 of the controller app on your devices until v4 has had more bug fixes?

    0
  • Ian Shepherd

True V3 requires a software change as the V4 'V3' controller is just an emulator and not true V3.
