Playback node2i via my iPhone or AirPods?

I've a node2i, with music sourced direct from my server and plays just fine connected to my amp and hifi, but sometimes I just want to play using my AirPods connected to my iPhone? When I open the BlueOS app on my phone, start to play a song it always tries to play via the node2i (and subsequent HiFi system), can I not play it via my phone instead? Or am I missing the point with this what I'm getting it is for example I'm out of the house, the node2i won't be on but I'd still like to stream the music from my server, via the blueOS app to my AirPods? IS that not possible so I can only stream via the node2i to my hifi?

  ah ok, found that, but even though my airpods are connected to my phone, in my ears in fact, BueOS cannot connect to them.
