New and full of questions

I have been on a deserted Island (technically) for the last 8 years and am now ready to set up a new system from scratch. A lot has changed! I have a huge music library and would like to access this as apposed to streaming. I have been playing with PLEX and like the platform and was wondering if I could have that with BlueOS. But without a "Player" I can't seem to access the software to test it out. I have many other questions like "NAS or MacMINI as a server" for Music/TV/Movies etc. Before the Island (actually it was a sailboat) I was recording engineer for 35 years so technically I'm capable. Thanks, and looking forward to the new knowledge from the group.

    Hi Ric,

    I didn't see any question marks in your post but I think these are your questions...

    1) The BluOS software only controls the Bluesound hardware. You cannot use one without the other.
    2) I prefer NAS for media storage because that's it's raison detre. There's many benefits of using a NAS instead of a personal computer. The device is designed for 24/7 operation. Data is mirrored to multiple drives to reduce chances of dataloss. Inevitably you will run out of space and modern NAS design makes it easy to increase storage. The tight integration of the hardware and software for a singular purpose means higher dependability and higher performance. BluOS will read from the NAS as well as from a personal computer.

    As Roger notes, Plex will not work with Bluesound, BluOS Controller and Roon will. The BluOS Controller app is tightly integrated with BluOS, the operating system on Bluesound devices. Bluesound are not 'passive' speakers or players but computers with an OS that is able to control many streaming sources: local files, streaming services as well as streaming radio.

    As for NAS vs MacMini question, the NAS has a clear advantage in file protection and scalability though the Mini will work and I've had one running 24/7 for 8 years. However my music (over 29,000 tracks) is all on a small 2 HD NAS with a RAID. This week after 6 years my NAS reported that one of disks was failing, all I had to do was hot swap it with a new drive and it rebuilt itself in a few hours, nothing at all was lost.
